This two contact hour home study continuing education course presents the basic knowledge needed to provide nursing care in the maternity setting. A description of nursing care strategies and skills is included for use in the clinical setting.

About the Author

Dr. Raines is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University. She received her Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Masters in Perinatal Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She is an active member of AWHONN and is the Section Education Coordinator for Florida. Dr. Raines has a variety of clinical experiences in maternal-child settings. She has spoken and authored several articles on topics specific to maternity nursing practice.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this home-study continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

Define key terms used in the management of the maternity patient.

Describe the four stages of labor.

Discuss the monitoring modalities used to evaluate uterine and fetal response to labor.

Outline nursing care of the woman in labor.

Identify danger signs in the laboring woman.

Outline the components of a post-partum assessment.

Discuss the nursing care of the post-partum woman.

Identify danger signs in the post-partum woman.

Discuss emotional needs of the post-partum woman.

Apply principles of caring to the nursing management of the maternity patient.
