This one contact hour home-study continuing education course provides a broad overview of childhood asthma. The diagnosis, pathophysiology, monitoring and environmental triggers of childhood asthma are discussed. Current pharmacological treatments, both oral and inhaled agents are presented along with emergency care of status asthmaticus. The nursing management, intervention and expected outcomes of childhood asthma are presented throughout the program.

Kathy Megrath is a certified pediatric nurse at St. Mary's Children's Hospital and Chairperson of the Board of the Florida Easter Seals of Palm Beach and Martin County. Mrs. Megrath earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University and her Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. The focus of Mrs. Megrath's nursing career has been on children and families living with chronic illness and disabilities.

Upon completion of this home study continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

  6. List the major nursing considerations with oral and inhaled pharmacological treatments.
  7. Identify nursing diagnosis and expected outcome for children with asthma.
  8. Discuss emergency care for status asthmaticus.
  9. Discuss family care management for children with asthma.
