The focus of this two contact hour home study continuing education course is care of the person with renal failure. An overview of the renal system is presented, along with a review of diagnostic laboratory tools/tests that measure renal function. Nursing management and treatment modalities are discussed for persons with renal failure, both acute and chronic.

About the Author: Dr. Ruth McCaffrey
Dr. Ruth McCaffrey is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, College of Nursing. She received her Nursing Doctorate from Case Western University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. McCaffrey maintains an active practice as an advanced family nurse practitioner.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home study continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the renal system.
  2. Discuss the functions of the kidneys and their relation to bodily function.
  3. Define criteria for the diagnosis of renal failure.
  4. Discuss diagnostic tools and laboratory tests that measure renal function.
  5. Identify the differences between acute and chronic renal failure.
  6. Identify treatment modalities for persons in chronic and acute renal failure.
  7. Discuss the nursing management for person in renal failure.
