This three contact hour home-study continuing education course provides an overview of some of the biological and chemical weapons that could possibly be used against United States citizens in a terrorist attack. Mechanism of action of potential agents, surveillance, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, medical and nursing intervention, and reporting and referral to appropriate agencies will be discussed.

About the Author: Kathi Voege-Harvey, MS, ARNP
Ms. Voege-Harvey is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Menopausal Clinician. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from West Virginia University and her Master's degree in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Ms. Voege-Harvey responded to a call by the Army to train civilian professionals in Medical Management of Biological and Chemical Casualties. She trained at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, and Ft. Dietrick, Maryland, and is a member of the National Nurses Response Team. Her 19 year old step son is currently stationed in Korea.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home study continuing education course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Describe objectives of biological and chemical terrorism.
  2. List agencies involved in the management of biological and chemical casualties.
  3. Describe epidemiological significance of specific agents used in terrorism.
  4. List mechanism of action, clinical manifestations, procedures for infection control and intervention for each of the following agents:
  5. Describe psychological significance of biological and chemical terrorism threats.
  6. List potential isolation techniques and facilities.
  7. Describe 3 key principles of decontamination.
  8. List defense equipment that should be available.
  9. Describe key components in Biological and Chemical Disaster preparedness.
