Course Description
This one-contact hour home-study continuing education course focuses on the concept of tissue perfusion as a central guiding focus in the care of the acutely ill patient. The program discusses the assessment of tissue perfusion, the identification of normal vs. expected vs. untoward findings, and the use of interventions supporting the tissue perfusion of each body cell.

About the Author
Dr. Susan Borglund has a Master's in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University and a Doctorate in Nursing from Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida. Her clinical background is in critical care nursing and she is currently teaching nursing research and critical care classes at Florida Atlantic University in the RN to BSN program.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss the concept of tissue perfusion.
2. Discuss the goal of maintaining aerobic cellular activity.
3. Describe the three components of the body's transportation system.
4. Define cardiac output, heart rate, stroke volume, preload, afterload and contractility.
5. Identify the effects of sympathetic nervous system stimulation on the vital organ system.
6. Describe the compensatory mechanisms of vasoconstriction and autotransfusion.
7. Discuss the hormonal compensatory mechanisms.
8. Explain the importance of assessing tissue perfusion in the care of the acutely ill individual.
