This two contact hour home study continuing education course focuses on care of the person with pulmonary emboli. An overview of the pulmonary system, risk factors associated with pulmonary emboli, strategies for prevention, and a review of the diagnostic tools and laboratory tests are presented. Nursing management of patients experiencing pulmonary emboli is described in terms of treatment modalities, patient education, prevention of recurrence and discharge planning.

About the Authors
Dr. Randy Scott is a pulmonologist practicing in the Fort Lauderdale area for 20 years. He obtained his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine and went on to board certification in pulmonary medicine at the University of North Carolina. He is a published author and frequent lecturer. In addition to a busy private practice he is the Co-director of Respiratory Therapy at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

Susan Bulfin is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner specializing in Family/Community Health, currently a faculty member at Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. Susan received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida and her Master's Degree in Nursing from Emory University. Her experience includes acute care, community health and women's health. She is currently research director for the Caring-Based Health Care Delivery Model, a joint partnership with the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and Boca Raton Community Hospital.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the functions of the pulmonary system and their relation to the body's functioning.
  2. List four risk factors for pulmonary emboli.
  3. Discuss the pathophysiology of thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis as they relate to pulmonary embolism.
  4. Identify the nurses' role in assisting in the prevention of thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis.
  5. List three criteria for the diagnosis of pulmonary emboli.
  6. List two diagnostic tools and laboratory tests that measure pulmonary function.
  7. Outline the pharmacological interventions available for treatment of pulmonary emboli.
  8. Select three nursing management and treatment modalities which facilitate the health of a person.
  9. Discuss patient education and discharge planning for the person recovering from pulmonary embolism.
