This two contact hour study continuing education course is focused on the nurse's interpretation of arterial blood gases and acid-base balance concepts. Additionally, associated nursing assessment criteria, interventions, and responsibilities are emphasized.

About the Author: Dr. Ruth McCaffrey

Dr. Ruth McCaffrey is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, College of Nursing. She received her Nursing Doctorate from Case Western University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. McCaffrey maintains an active practice as an advanced family nurse practitioner.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this home-study course, the participant will be able to:

• Cite the components that make up an arterial blood gas (ABG) and the normal values specific to each component.
• Develop a systematic approach to evaluating an ABG.
• State the respiratory components of an ABG.
• State the metabolic components of an ABG.
• Recognize respiratory acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis and list common clinical conditions that accompany each of these disorders.
• Discuss the term compensation and recognize if an ABG is partially or fully compensated.
• Outline the nursing interventions and responsibilities associated with receiving the results of an ABG laboratory report
