About the Author:
Annmarie Clennan, MSN, ARNP Annmarie Clennan is currently a clinical implementation analyst at Boca Raton Community Hospital in Boca Raton, Florida. Ms. Clennan has been a practicing registered nurse for approximately 12 years, specializing in intensive care nursing, with extensive experience in telemetry and in cardiac nursing. She earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of South Carolina, and her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Nursing from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. Her Master's degree focused on family nursing.

Course Description:
This one contact hour home study continuing education course focuses on the nursing care of the person experiencing sepsis. The background, pathophysiology, predisposing factors, and subjective and objective findings of this disease process will be described. This description will provide a basis for understanding the rationale for the nursing strategies used to halt the progression of sepsis and to promote the person's recovery to optimum health.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, the learner will be able to:
  • Define sepsis and discuss its incidence and prevalence in the United States.
  • Explain the progression of sepsis in terms of its stages.
  • Describe the pathophysiology and factors predisposing a person to sepsis.
  • Recognize persons at risk for sepsis and the varying presenting signs and symptoms of this elusive disorder.
  • Outline the steps in the nursing assessment and nursing management in caring for the person with sepsis.
