This two contact hour home-study continuing education course provides a broad overview of diabetes. The diagnosis, signs and symptoms, monitoring and co-morbid conditions are discussed. The new approach toward dietary management, Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), is explained as well as management of activity. Current pharmacological treatments, both oral agents and insulin are presented along with the use of the insulin pump. Emergency care of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and complications of the disease are also discussed. The nursing management of diabetes is presented throughout the program.

About the Author
Laureen M. Fleck, MS, ARNP, CDE, NCSN

Laureen Fleck is currently a certified family nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator. She received her Master of Science degree in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Mrs. Fleck maintains an active practice in Boca Raton, Florida and is often asked to speak and consult on diabetes issues regarding family, school and education. Her current research focus is the area of insulin resistance.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home study continuing education course, the participant will be able to:

  3. Describe signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia/hypoglycemmia.
  4. Discuss co-morbid conditions related to diabetes.
  5. Discuss current terminology of diagnostic tests.
  6. List the components of Medical Nutrition Therapy.
  7. Discuss the steps to develop an individual a meal plan.
  8. Develop an appropriate individual activity plan.
  9. Identify the various oral agents used in diabetes management.
  10. List the major nursing considerations to oral medication therapy.
  11. Discuss the types of insulin and their onset and duration.
  12. Discuss the various laboratory and glucose monitoring needed to evaluate medication therapy.
  13. Discuss emergency hyper/hypoglycemic situations.
  14. Discuss the use of insulin pump therapy.
  15. Discuss the use of caring in the approach to the psychological components of diabetes management.
  16. Discuss the potential complications of diabetes and associated nursing reponses.
