Nurses who are caring for older adults across settings have a responsibility to minimize the risks associated with medication use. This one contact hour home study continuing education program presents the normal age-related changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and their impact of medication use. Nursing assessment and health education promoting safe medication use is emphasized.

Dr. Kathleen Jett, RN, ARNP, BC, PhD
Associate Professor
Dr. Kathleen Jett holds her bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in nursing from the University of Florida. She has worked in a number of settings and in a number of roles, all focused on the care of the frail elderly. Dr. Jett has conducted research and teaching regarding the diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence in older women. Dr. Jett has published articles on a variety of subjects and frequently conducts continuing education programs. She is currently an associate professor of nursing and Coordinator of the Gerontology Certificate Program at Florida Atlantic University.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this home-study continuing education program, the learner will be able to:
  • Explain the normal age-related changes effecting pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Identify the components of a comprehensive medication assessment.
  • Identify medications that are contraindicated for use in older adults.
  • Identify strategies which promote safe medication use in the elders.
