This one contact hour home-study continuing education program focuses on understanding culture from a humanistic perspective. The course content focuses on the essentiality of culturally competent nursing care in practice within the context of worldwide migration and respect for multiculturalism.

Charlotte D. Barry, Ph.D., RN Associate Professor Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing

Dr. Charlotte Barry received her doctorate degree in nursing from the University of Miami and her masters and bachelors degree in nursing from Florida Atlantic University. She has published several articles on caring in nursing and cultural care. Dr. Barry recently returned from Uganda where she assisted in the development of a Masters program in nursing. Dr. Barry is currently an Associate Professor of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home-study continuing education program, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss both the historical and contemporary role of nursing in providing culturally competent care.
  • Explain three concepts of culture.
  • Describe Leininger's Theory of Culture Care: Universality and Diversity.
  • Analyze cultural caring as an essential component of nursing practice grounded in caring.
