This one-contact hour home-study continuing education course focuses on the basic information a nurse needs in caring for the person with pressure ulcers. The essential aspects of a wound assessment and key principles in wound healing are discussed. The nursing interventions are based on adherence to the principles and the selection of wound products rather than the stage of the wound.

About the Author
Kathleen Jett holds Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Nursing from the University of Florida. She has worked in a number of settings and in a variety of capacities, all focused on the care of the frail elderly. Dr. Jett has published numerous articles related to elder care. In addition, she is a well-known speaker and has conducted continuing education programs in the area of gerontology. Dr. Jett worked for a number of years as a nurse practitioner in a group practice in Tacoma, Washington. She is currently an Assistant Professor of nursing at Florida Atlantic University.

Nicole Sender is a graduate of Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital (Chicago) Nursing Program. She has presented posters at national wound and skin conferences and has developed a case study on the Heelift® Suspension Boot. Ms. Sender is the Director of Nursing at a 120 bed skilled nursing facility in Tacoma, Washington.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home-study continuing education course, the nurse will be able to:
  1. Define common terminology in wound care.
  2. Conduct a detailed and complete assessment of a wound.
  3. Identify four key principles in wound healing.
  4. Describe the rationale behind each principle.
  5. Select the appropriate type of dressing based on the condition of the wound.
