9 –11: The Art of Nursing
Last fall after the tragic events of 9-11, nursing students participated in an art project titled “Creating Harmony Within.” The purpose of the project was for the students to understand that nurses are often called on to create harmony from chaos. The following artistic expressions and interpretations illuminate their transformation from chaos to harmony and inspire hope.

Freedom, Choice, Unity

“This flag shows the beauty of the American flag in and of itself.”
“The changes in the color of the sky represents that our country has changed but the symbol of our flag remains constant.”
“The picture is taken at a public institution that provides education without discrimination reflects our freedom as Americans.”

Why?

“I used gray and green watercolors to represent the gloomy appearance of the aftermath and the somber mood that many people felt after the incident.”
“Why did this have to happen? Why would someone want to take so many lives?”
“I think this project illuminates the vulnerability of each of us as we open up to be present for each other…”

Compassion

“I felt like my heart was going to burst.”
“Today, I look at people differently, and I also try not to take my loved ones for granted.”
“I was overcome with love and compassion for those who I didn’t even know.”
“I can communicate caring through art.”

Tranquility

“This special place brings me comfort in the most trying times.”
“The soothing swirls of water, the sparkles of the sand and the beauty of the flowers gives me hope to look above the tragedy and see the beauty of the world.”
“As the nurses waited to care on 9-11, no one came.”
•This project helped us nurse each other.”

United

“The heart represents the pain our hearts feel, the strength our hearts possess, the honor of a county that has come together as one to protect and care for that which we love.”
“The burst of yellow represents the hope that is still there amongst the rubble.”
“Sometimes our feelings can be expressed in words and sometimes its easier with colors and shapes. In nursing we must come to know our feelings and feelings of others.”

Hope

“This image suggests music or a song flowing from the heart and out into the space surrounding it.”
“As I look back now, I see the song in my heart was a lullaby for harmony and peace.”
“Wanting to hope, daring to hope, in a small voice that there can be harmony again.”

Peace

“The blending of the colors represents the differences in each of us and our capacity to come together in a unity.”
“Peace is the ability to live together in harmony.”
“This tragedy highlighted our interconnections to each other and illuminated caring as the common thread of healing and peace.”

Fidelity

“The flag is a representation of the strength of the American people.”
“The fluidity of the watercolors represents the pain in our hearts for those that were lost, for what was lost.”
“I now know, I can nurse by silence, I can nurse by drawing, I can nurse by talking, the secret is to find the path to reach each patient.”

“Walk On”

“I felt the country move on from this tragedy and nothing will stop us.”
“Nursing is more than just saving physical lives it is consoling and comforting those who lost loved ones.”
“Through this project I have discovered that each of us express caring in different ways.”
“As I listen to my peers stories, I understood how strong America is and how much we care about one another.”

Looking Back, Looking Forward

“Nursing calls us to be there in the moment at a moments notice.”
“Caring is required to respond to the moment, there may not be time for reflection, there is a call to nurse and there is not time for anything except the response.”
“However, reflecting on the response can bring harmony and peace.”

Closing Reflections In closing, let us appreciate, critically reflect and affirm. –Appreciation of the art of the student nurses and the art and beauty of nursing.
–Critical Reflection on the meaning of this work to my practice, my profession, and me.
–Affirmation of commitment to understanding self, other, and nursing (Chinn, 1999).
